Varsity Volleyball Team Eyes Conference Title with Strong Senior Leadership

-senior players seeking to continue in college play

-setting goals for conference & district titles

-introducing new and returning players

Story by Chloe Dixon

We recently had the opportunity to speak with our volleyball coaching staff, which includes Varsity Head Coach Carla Basler and Assistant Varsity Coach and JV Coach Kristen Barnes.

Last season, the Varsity Volleyball team recorded 12 wins and 17 losses. Competing in Class 3, District 2, the team has set high goals for the upcoming season.

Coach Basler shared some exciting news regarding players interested in continuing their volleyball careers at the collegiate level: “We have a couple of girls interested in playing college ball, and they are currently exploring scholarship opportunities. While nothing is official yet, I’ll keep you updated if anything changes.”

The Varsity Volleyball team is fortunate to have a strong group of returning seniors, including Abby Boyer (DS), Kale Clements (OH), Kaylin Fallert (RH), Kaylin Harmon (MH), Sophia Huck (S), and Joleigh Parker (S). In addition, the team will benefit from the contributions of returning juniors Emma Gegg (OH) and sophomore Emme Browne (L).

Key Positions:

OH: Outside Hitter

MH: Middle Hitter

RH: Right Side Hitter

S: Setter

DS: Defensive Specialist

L: Libero

“We don’t have official team captains,” Coach Basler explained. “Our seniors naturally take on leadership roles, and they’ve done a fantastic job guiding the team this year.”

Coach Basler is optimistic about the team’s depth this season, noting, “We have a lot of players who will be key contributors for us. Team unity is a major focus this year, and we emphasize being good teammates—whether it’s complimenting each other during drills or hustling to keep plays alive.”

When asked about goals for the upcoming season, Coach Basler emphasized the importance of aiming high: “I think every competitive varsity team sets its sights on conference and district titles. We work every day to figure out how to make those goals a reality. We believe we have the talent, work ethic, and camaraderie to achieve those goals and go beyond.”

Several new players have also stepped up this season. Coach Basler highlighted two in particular: “Aleah Filer, a freshman, has stepped in as our secondary middle. Vivian Kiefer, a junior, was a serving specialist last year, but she’s taken on a setter role this season due to an injury. She brings positive communication, good decision-making, and solid defense to the court. Her versatility makes her a valuable utility player for us this year.”

Thank you, Coach Carla Basler, for sharing your time and insights.
