The Ste. Genevieve High School football team faced a tough challenge last week, suffering a shutout loss against St. Vincent. Although the game was difficult, there were valuable lessons to be learned. The most important takeaway was seeing how our players respond to adversity and their ability to bounce back. This week's practices have shown that the team is committed to navigating setbacks while continuing to improve.
After reviewing the game film, the coaches identified several positives that were overshadowed by the final score. Many foundational elements were in place, providing a strong base to build upon moving forward. However, the team also recognized the need for corrections, especially after failing to score any points and allowing numerous plays by the opponent. This week, the focus in practice has been on addressing these areas and reinforcing the mindset that, regardless of the opponent, the primary goal is always self-improvement.
Preparing for the Week 2 matchup is different from preparing for Week 1; having game footage provides insights into the opponent’s strengths, weaknesses, and strategies. University City presents a unique challenge, being the largest team physically that Ste. Genevieve will face on the line this season. This game will be an excellent test to see if solid fundamentals can help overcome physical mismatches—a crucial factor for any team aiming for playoff success.
We had the chance to catch up with senior football player Charlie Corbett. Charlie enjoys playing football because it’s a sport that demands physicality and mental sharpness; you not only have to be tough, but you also need to know your role on the field. After high school, Charlie plans to attend a four-year college. He is currently applying to multiple schools, though he hasn’t decided on one yet. To prepare, he’s been busy with applications and saving money from his job at Huasteca Potosina, a local Mexican restaurant.
Outside of football, Charlie is actively involved in several clubs, including theatre, library club, gaming club, and spirit club. One personal goal he has set for himself this year is to start in his position while maintaining good grades to ensure he’s ready for college. Charlie’s dedication extends beyond the field as he balances academics, extracurricular activities, and work, demonstrating the resilience and drive that Ste. Genevieve football players strive to embody.
As the team looks ahead to the next game, the focus remains on growth and perseverance. The players are determined to learn from their mistakes, refine their skills, and continue building a solid foundation for the season. The challenges they face now will only make them stronger as they prepare for the road ahead.
