I recently had the opportunity to catch up with esports player Bennett Walls, who has been gaming for as long as he can remember. He got into competitive gaming last spring during his Organic Chemistry course. Bennett and some other students enjoyed playing Super Smash Bros. in their free time, and one of his classmates suggested he join the esports team. Since then, he has been hooked.
There are many aspects of gaming that drew Bennett in. He enjoys everything from immersive single-player experiences to highly competitive first-person shooters. When it comes to esports, Bennett especially loves the challenge of playing against stronger opponents and learning from those experiences. The team plays their games on the Nintendo Switch.
In the competitive scene, they focus on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart. Competitions are held individually in the fall, with best-of-three 1v1 matches across the state. In the spring, they compete as a team in two 5v5 matches. The team has also attended an in-person tournament at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) and hopes to participate in more events like that in the future. This year, the competition is split into two levels: regional and state. After the regional playoffs, the top players advance to the state competition.
